For the English employees it's harder, because we all have to find something distinctive to talk about. That's why I went first. It would given me a bigger target to hit, or so I thought.
Anyway I gave my little speech on Saturday. I set it up to try and give some of the "overall achitecture" of England, so that the others could come in, and hang their little bit off it. One of the things I talked about was empire. I was trying to make the point that a tiny little country the size of Guanxhu province ended up ruling a 3rd of the world.
Man did that idea backfire. Later, the Nigerians, Kenyans, Indians Zimbabweans et al. all came up to me and asked if I was really proud of our accomplishments. I know that the empire wasn't perfect, but I felt like I was on the wrong side of the "What did the Romans ever do for us?" conversation from the Life of Brian.
Trust me when I say that I get that some of the things we did were a long way from perfect, but look at where you were before, and ask yourself if some of the things we did weren't an improvement.
