I went to see "The Messengers" yesterday.

I went to see "The Messengers" yesterday and it was a really really bad film. It's about a family who move to a farm in North Dakota, at which point the son, daughter and eventually mother start to see seeming dead bodies a la The Grudge. To stop seeing them, they have to work out why they're there.

Part of the problem, well most of the problem really, was the fact that the film was so derivative it was scary. It had elements of The Grudge, An American Haunting and A Stranger Calls, and that just the films from 2006 that it reminds me of. So all in all it's just plain bad. A complete waste of my money.

I went to see "Breach" today.

I went to see "Breach" today and here's what I don't get. The film's about uncovering a spy who's operating within the FBI and Ryan Phillipe (sp?), Laura Linney, Gary Cole and the African American guy who played the President in the first few series of 24 (I want to call him Dennis Hastert, but I know that that's an Illinois congressman) are going to weed him out.

It's not a "crash bang wallop" style spy thriller. It focuses more on the relationship between Phillipe and Chris Carter (the spy) and the shifting sands of power between two. So what don't I get? What I don't understand is why you bring your 8 or 9 year old child to a film like that. When I sat down I was followed by this family who brought their 8 and 9 year old sons to see the film.

To me that makes precisely no sense. I know that kids should be stretched and intellectually challenged, but I really don't believe that that was happening here. What really irritates me is the fact that "The Road to Terabithia" and "Norbit" were showing in the cinema and I'm inclined to suspect that if the parents really wanted to take the kids to see a movie they really ought to have gone to see one of those. I'm more inclined to think that they've good two good kids (kudos to them for that) and they wanted to see Breach, but didn't want to pay (or couldn't get) a sitter.

Incidentally, Phillipe was good in Crash last year, but wasn't really that believable as an FBI agent.
