Something new I learned today

I've got to stop assuming I know things about American states. I'd always assumed either Portland or Bangor was the capital of Maine. It's not. It's Augusta. Secondly, I'd always assumed that Maine was one of the founding states (why wouldn't I? It's in the bit Britain used to own). It is, but only indirectly. It was part of Massachusetts till 1820, when it became independent.
