A few years ago, before she became famous I think, Sandra Bullock made a film in which scientists discovered a drug that made you attractive to the opposite sex when you talked (hard to believe it wasn't a success isn't it).

This book uses the same principle, except that it uses scent rather than voice patterns. A young man has such a sensitive nose that he can discern what's in a perfume (and how to improve on it) with little difficulty at all. When he smells someone who he believes to have the perfect smell, he kills her and bottle her for her scent. He continues on in this vein till he is caught. When he's caught you're wondering if he can produce something that can get him off, and... you'll have to read the book to find the answer.

I learned quite a bit about how "old school perfumers" worked in this book, but I have to admit I didn't like it. I kept thinking of Sandra Bullock as I read this book (and expecting her to pop up in unexpected places). That limited my view of an otherwise (seemingly) well reviewed book. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with her, just not right for anything in this book.
