When did KFC start thinking they were a proper restaurant?

I take my kids for a "junk food meal" once a week as a way of getting out of the house and paying attention to them for a while. In England this meant going to the Pizza Hut which was round the corner but since I came here we've been to Whataburger a few times too.

We decided to try something different today and go to KFC. Now I haven't been to a KFC since they stopped calling themselves Kentucky Fried Chicken, so here's my rhetorical question for today, when did KFC start acting like they thought they were a proper restaurant?

In addition, we just want to order some chicken and fries, but I'm inclined to think the girl behind the counter wasn't that sharp. She offered us mashed potatoes as a side order. While I was trying to get my head round that offer, my daughter was asking her "Why would we want mash if we were getting fries?"
