I finished "The Matarese Circle" by Robert Ludlum today. It's set (and was written) in the 1970s and was a very dated looking book if I'm honest.

The book sees a CIA and a KGB agent combine to together to defeat a group called The Matarese Council. The Council is trying to paralyse governments across the world in the hope that the political leaders will get out of their way and let them get on with the job of making money for the firms.

It's a bad book because it took almost 200 pages for Ludlum to get the two agents to work together and another 200 pages for them to work out what the do about the Council.

Maybe I'm just somebody with a short attention span, but I'm inclined to think that what might have worked as a "good thriller" in the 1970s might not work now because current readers want less build up and more story.
