It’s about Anne Boleyn (Portman) and her sister Mary (Johansson), both of whom were supposed to be lovers of Henry VIII (Eric Bana) at one stage or another. I’m no history buff (the only thing I knew about Anne before this film was that she was supposed to have had 6 fingers on one hand), but Anne’s presented as the reason the Church of England was founded (and the woman who gave the church its theological basis) and that’s just silly in my mind.
As I understand it, religious "winds of change" blowing through Europe and Henry VIII left the Catholic church because his subjects were leaving it and it’d be problematic to hold the line when that was happening. Anne Boleyn might have contributed to him jumping, but did she push? I doubt it.
